Gavin Simpson
is a human rights attorney and investigator from Scotland, who presently spends his time between West Africa (Sierra Leone and Liberia) and New York. Gavin lived in Freetown for three years until 2005, working as Lead Researcher for the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). He has since returned frequently to continue supporting Sierra Leonean partner organisations in their efforts to follow-up on the recommendations of the TRC and address some of the root causes of conflict. More recently, he has also helped to shape the inquiry process of the Liberia TRC.
Gavin is passionate about using film, sports, hip-hop music and communications technology to educate and activate broader audiences – particularly young people – around human rights issues. In addition to German, French and Serbo-Croat, Gavin speaks fluent Krio, the lingua franca in Sierra Leone.
Rebecca Chaiklin
Born in New York City , a graduate of NYU. Rebecca was the Director and Producer on The Party's Over (Last Party 2000), starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, released theatrically in 2001 in the US and internationally. Rebecca is the Producer on Poster Boy, an independent feature which premiered at the 2004 Tribeca and Locarno Film Festivals, released theatrically in 2006. Rebecca was the Producer on Men Make Woman Crazy Theory, Zoe Cassavettes directorial debut, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and the Producer on Midnight in Cuba, a feature documentary, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival. As a founding partner of Article 19 films, Chaiklin co-directed and co-produced Lockdown, USA and Cry Haiti and is a Producer on Bling.
Ishmael Beah
was born in Sierra Leone in 1980. He moved to the United States in 1998 and finished his last two years of high school at the United Nations International School in New York. In 2004 he graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in political science. He is a member of the Human Rights Watch Children’s Rights Division Advisory Committee and has spoken before the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Center for Emerging Threats and Opportunities (CETO) at the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory, and many other NGO panels on children affected by the war. His work has appeared in VespertinePress and LIT magazine. He lives in New York City.
Filippo Bozotti
Born in Milan, Italy, fluent in Italian and French, Filippo Bozotti is a Founding Partner of Article 19 Films. His credits include Lockdown, USA , and Bling, produced in association with the UN, which premiered on Vh1 in 2007. He is a Producer on feature documentary Cry Haiti, currently in post-production and has starred in the Sopranos, Showtime movie Hate and in Sofia Coppola's Marie-Antoinette.
Back in Italy, Filippo is a founding partner of 2night SpA, an Italian based entertainment company, supplying entertainment content to the major Italian media on different platforms and providing PR services to the major Italian entertainment venues. Filippo led 2night's financial and sales team from 2001 to 2003. He is a Graduate of Boston University.
Phyllis Kaufman
Entertainment Attorney Phyllis Kaufman, is a Principal in the Media and Entertainment Group in Fish & Richardson's New York office. Her practice emphasizes a diverse range of matters in media and entertainment, including negotiation and preparation of all forms of development, financing, production, and distribution agreements. She represents individual and institutional clients in all areas of the entertainment industry, including film, television, theatre, and multi-media entertainment, with a specialization in production finance/production legal representation. Phyllis is also a member of the Executive Committee of Film Aid International, a project of the International Rescue Committee working in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
